Ever wondered what it would be like to be involved in a moment from our nation's past? Well history lovers, military enthusiasts and intrigued spectators, your wait is over. The chance to be transported back to a time, which will never be forgotten in our nation's history, is only a raffle ticket away.
Created as a fundraising event in the lead up to This is Not Art (TiNA), an emerging and experimental arts festival, held annually over the October longweekend, Octapod and The Lunaticks Society join forces to create a unique opportunity to fire one of two 6-inch Mk VII guns. Installed as the main armament in 1911 at the historic Fort Scratchley site, they are the only guns to ever have been used in crossfire on 8 June, 1942, the day World War II came to Newcastle. They now rest permanently at Fort Scratchley, as a reminder of the fascinating history of this site, and a reminder of the role Newcastle played in the defence of our nation.
On Friday 4 October, during the TiNA festival, the Fort will be used to host a number of events, including the highly anticipated, Newi Awards. Presented by The Lunaticks Society and now in its third year, the renowned program gives recognition to digital excellence and acknowledges the very best digital talent in Australasia.
Before the Newi Awards at 6pm, audiences are invited to wander in through the Fort Scratchley grounds and from 5pm, either watch or (if you one of the luck three) participate in the firing of the guns.
